Alberta Buys Up Privately-Owned Gaming Machines

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the CBC: "The province has spent more than $1 million to buy up the last 11 privately-owned gambling devices in Alberta.

"The province had been allowing operators at 11 Alberta casinos to keep 70 per cent of the money from terminals that simulated horse racing for bettors, compared to the 15 per cent operators are paid on slot machines.

"…The lucrative deal had resulted in an additional $21 million for the casino owners since they bought the machines in 1996, auditor general Fred Dunn estimated…"
