Alabama Slot Bill Dies

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – As reported by the Birmingham News: "Lady luck did not smile Monday on an effort to legalize high-stakes bingo. Instead, the idea went to the dead bill graveyard right along with a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriages.

"Members of the House of Representatives ended the 2004 session Monday night without voting on the gambling bill or the gay marriage ban, two of the more controversial bills of the session. Both bills were sure to bring up fiery debate and lengthy filibusters. Instead, they died quiet deaths, never being brought up for a vote.

"The gambling bill would have let the Birmingham and Mobile dog tracks operate high-stakes bingo games if voters approved. The Senate passed the proposed constitutional amendment, but supporters never got the 63 votes needed in the 105-member House…"
