Alabama residents warm to gambling

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — As reported by the Press-Register: "A new statewide poll reflects majority support for gambling in Alabama if it generates money for schools.

"Thirty-six percent of respondents to the Press-Register/University of South Alabama poll said they approve of gambling that funds education, and another 19 percent approve regardless of the purpose — a total of 55 percent.

"Some Democrats and education officials have suggested that the state expand and tax gaming in order to bolster state education revenues, which are projected to fall more than $1 billion over two years.

"Republican Gov. Bob Riley has taken a hard line against gambling, and 44 percent of those polled last week were similarly opposed..."
