Alabama governor vows to fight illegal gambling

PELHAM, Alabama -- As reported by The Birmingham News: "Gov. Bob Riley vowed tonight in Pelham to fight illegal gambling, which he charged is expanding in almost every county in the state.

"'All across the state of Alabama today we are seeing an expansion of gambling that we have never seen, that very few states have ever had to endure,' Riley told a crowd of about 175 at the Pelham Civic Complex.

"'All of us know about places like Walker County where you have the bingo halls that have basically erupted to the point today that they just dominate the county. What you may not understand is this is becoming more and more prevalent in every county in the state.'

"Riley's stop in Pelham, which looked a little like a campaign rally, was organized by the Shelby County Republican Party and various church groups all opposed to gambling..."
