Ads Focus on Proposal Debate

19 October 2004

Las Vegas Sun

LANSING, Mich. -- Supporters of Proposal 1 are countering the Michigan Lottery and Gov. Jennifer Granholm, saying in new advertisements their initiative would not hurt funding for public schools.

The new ads are the latest in the debate about Proposal 1, on the Michigan ballot Nov. 2. The proposal would require most new gambling ventures to be approved by voters at both state and local levels.

Tribal casinos and Detroit's three casinos would be exempt from the constitutional amendment, which would be retroactive to Jan. 1. The measure was put on the ballot after horse-racing tracks pushed to add slot machines to attract more people.

Casino interests are the major funders of the pro-Proposal 1 campaign, which includes two new television ads.
