Activists rallying support to vote against casinos in Penghu23 September 2009Taipei, Taiwan -- As reported by Central News Agency: "An anti-gambling drive was launched in Taipei Tuesday to urge voters to vote against allowing casinos to be built in Taiwan's offshore county of Penghu in an upcoming referendum. "The campaign, organized by the Penghu Anti-Gambling Alliance, called for residents in the archipelago who now live in Taiwan proper to come forward to protest against the proposal to allow casinos to be built in Penghu. "A referendum -- organized by the Penghu county government -- is scheduled to take place in Penghu Sept. 26. If a majority of the voters vote for approving casinos, then the referendum will be binding. "...In January, Taiwan's Kuomintang-dominated legislature passed an amendment to the Offshore Islands Development Act which legalized the opening of casinos on Taiwan's outlying islands for the first time. "...Various surveys have shown that a majority of Penghu residents favor allowing casinos to be built in Penghu because they believe the casinos will boost the remote county's flagging economy..." |
