A 'Good Friday' for U.K. bookmakers

LONDON -- As reported by the Times Online: "The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ did not seem high on the minds of those betting on the 12.27 at Walthamstow yesterday.

"For the faithful, it was one of the most important days in the Christian calendar. For the punters excitedly waving betting slips as the pack of greyhounds sprinted from the traps to the finishing line, this Good Friday was better than any other.

"Especially, of course, if their money was on number five. The East London stadium was one of thousands of gambling venues across England, Scotland and Wales open for business yesterday. It was the first time that the public were free to have a flutter on a Good Friday, thanks to the Gambling Act 2005, which came into force last year and allows bookmakers to open every day except Christmas...
