A Gamble on Gambling5 August 2004DELAWARE -- As reported by the Delaware News Journal: "With up to 14 slots parlors expected to open in Pennsylvania as early as next year, gaming industry experts say Delaware has two choices. "The state can fight for market share by expanding gambling with table games and sports betting, reducing its take from casinos to encourage re-investment in casino hotels and resort complexes, and allowing smoking at casinos. "Or the state can get used to doing without a large portion of the nearly $200 million in revenue it has come to expect from its three racetrack casinos. "Many areas have gone through a similar fight and have come out stronger in the end, said Roger Gros of the trade publication Global Gaming Business. "…Starting next year, the first slots parlors are expected to open across Pennsylvania, with up to 61,000 slot machines statewide. That's more slots than all of the Las Vegas strip or Atlantic City. "…More than 70 percent of Delaware's slots players come from outside Delaware. State officials estimate gambling revenues to state government will be cut by $35 million annually when Pennsylvania slots parlors open. |
