94-Year Old Player: Poker Keeps Me Young

19 April 2004

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Six days a week, Anne Kolmetsky leaves her Brighton Towers condominium to take a short but often brisk walk to the Tropicana Casino and Resort, where she gambles in a poker room three to four hours a day.

"That may not sound out of the ordinary in this town frequented by thousands of poker players every day, but Kolmetsky certainly doesn't look like the rest of the mostly male, cigar-smoking crowd. That's because Kolmetsky is 94 years old. Oh, and by the way, she turns 95 on Saturday.

"Don't let her age fool you. Although she might not be a card shark, Kolmetsky holds her own. A seven-card stud veteran, Kolmetsky trades barbs with other players, bluffs when she needs to and wins more often than she loses.

"Cards are what made her move into her Brighton Towers condo 31 years ago after a friend told her about regular card games there.

"Cards also helped Kolmetsky make many friends, but maybe none as close to her heart as Anthony Marrone. Although she says, 'Don't dare call him my boyfriend. I'm too old for a boyfriend,' it's clear that they care very much for each other.

"…According to Kolmetsky, poker also keeps her healthy.

"…'I can't be in the house all day. When I sit around, I think about the aches and pains and all of that nonsense. I'm OK when I sleep and when I'm playing poker.'

"..Like many senior citizens with little or no family, the casinos become more than just a hobby; they supply purpose.

"… Kolmetsky seems happy to be able to play cards as often as she does. She's happy to meet new people, and she's happy whether she wins or loses.

"And when people talk to her and compliment her on how she looks, she smiles and thanks them. In fact, the only person who doesn't seem to make a big deal out of Kolmetsky's age and passion for poker is Kolmetsky…"
