52 Filipino Worker Caught Gambling on Cockfights

SOUTH KOREA – As reported by the Korea Times: ``Police on Tuesday said they rounded up 52 Filipino workers for gambling on cockfights in Namyangju, Kyonggi Province on Sunday.

``Nine of them were arrested for organizing the rights at a deserted factory in the city to lure Filipino workers to gambling.

``One of those arrested was identified by the surname Atienza, 42. Police also booked 25 others without arrest on the same charges.

``…Police said the nine arrested have been staging cockfights since December 2000, adding that participants bet 1-3 million won ($830-$2,500) for each cockfight for two hours at 1 p.m. every Sunday.

``…The gambling organizers allegedly bought the roosters in the open-air Moran Market in Songnam City, and trained them for fighting. They were found to have put specially designed blades, called tares, on the roosters feet to increase the injuries inflicted on each other during the fighting…"
