2005 a Winner for Irish Horse Racing

IRELAND -- As reported by RTE News: "Attendances at Irish racecourses reached a new all time high in 2005. Horse Racing Ireland says that attendances last year reached 1.43 million, with a buoyant second half of the year contributing most of the growth of 44,000 racegoers on the previous year's figures.

"The total number of fixtures on the island of Ireland rose from 305 to 313 last year. In the Republic of Ireland, there were 291 fixtures compared to 281 in 2004. The HRI says that despite the increased fixtures, the average attendance per meeting remained strong at 4,914.

"The release of the 2005 racing statistics also reveals that total on-course betting rose by 1.6% to €236.7m. The Tote grew by 3.8% to €49.3m, which the HRI says includes a continuing trend in betting in overseas Tote pools..."
