2 Sides Wager Big in Maine Casino Fight

AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Boston Globe: ``A Las Vegas developer's plans to construct a $650 million casino in southern Maine has triggered the most expensive referendum campaign in the state's history.

``With less than two weeks to go before voters head to the polls, casino advocates and opponents are running television spots in an advertising spending spree that has already surpassed $6.8 million.

``Those on both sides of Question 3 on Maine's ballot expect that by the time Election Day arrives Nov. 4, total fund-raising will range somewhere between $8 million and $10 million.

```The stakes are high,' said Doug Clopp, an election analyst who works for the state's Money In Politics project. 'Nothing less than jobs, the economy, and the very culture of the state hang in the balance.'

``According to campaign finance reports filed with the state ethics commission, Think About It, a political action committee that supports the casino, had raised $4.7 million as of Sept. 30. More than $3 million was contributed by Marnell Corrao, a Las Vegas developer who hopes to build the casino in Sanford for the state's Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indian tribes, who would jointly manage the facility…"
