$65.8 Million Powerball Winner28 June 2004UNITED STATES – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Powerball paid off big for one lucky ticket Saturday night. The winning ticket worth $65.8 million was purchased in South Carolina. The winner will now have to decide between the 29-year, 30-payment annuity and the cash option worth $34.2 million. The winner will have 60 days after their ticket is validated to make that decision. In addition to the jackpot winner, 471,368 other Powerball players across the nation won a total of almost $4.2 million in cash prizes. The numbers drawn were: 9, 17, 32, 41, 47 and the Powerball was 8. The Power Play multiplier was 5. Eight players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Indiana, Kentucky (2), Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin. None of the winning players purchased the Power Play option. If they had, they would have multiplied their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000. Twenty-five players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Two of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000. More than 59,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. Players purchased more than 16.6 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night. The jackpot for the Wednesday, June 30 drawing will be $10 million with a cash option of $5.2 million. The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in 2003. That translates into more than $600 million for worthwhile state projects. Powerball is now played in 26 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Maine will begin sales on July 30. For more information on Powerball, including video of the drawing, please visit our website at http://www.powerball.com |
