$30 Million Powerball Jackpot Won

23 December 2004

UNITED STATES – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Three lucky players in Arizona, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania matched all 6 numbers Wednesday and will share in a $30 million jackpot. The players will now have to decide if they want to take their portion in a 29-year, 30-installment annuity, or the one time cash "lump sum" amount of $16,988,668 split three ways.

There were a total of 405,216 additional winners in America's Game Wednesday evening. Those winners won prizes totaling $4,714,487.

The numbers drawn were 2, 7, 11, 24, 31 and the Powerball was 18. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

Seven players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The ticket was sold in Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana (2), Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. One additional player from Maine not only matched that prize level but also purchased the Power Play for a total win of $500,000. Forty-seven players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Two additional players not only matched 4+1, but also purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000. A total of 54,594 winning Powerball plays were multiplied by 5.

Winners were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot, from 2 to 5 times. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players purchased more than $15.4 million in tickets between Saturday and Wednesday night. The jackpot for Saturday, December 25, will be a $10 million annuity, or $5.5 million cash.

The lotteries sold more than $2.2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY04. That translates into more than $660 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
