$239 Million Mystery Winners Revealed

31 March 2004

UNITED STATES – (Press Release) -- Ever since it was discovered that one ticket sold in Virginia had won the entire $239 million jackpot in the February 20, 2004 Mega Millions drawing, people across the country have wondered what happened to that extremely valuable piece of paper. Now the wait is over. The mystery winners are about to step forward.

On Thursday, April 1, 2004, Virginia Lottery officials will present the winners with the mega prize during a news conference in Richmond.

The ticket, which was purchased at Red Apple in Stephens City, Virginia, was the only ticket in that drawing to match the winning numbers 01-13-20-21- 30 and the Mega Ball number 24.

"We have finally heard from the winners of the jackpot won on February 20th, and tomorrow they will claim the second largest undivided jackpot in U. S. history," says Virginia Lottery Executive Director Penelope W. Kyle. "Now the winners need to decide whether to take the $239 million in 26 annual payments of $9.19 million per year before taxes or a one-time cash option of approximately $141.5 million before taxes."

All Virginia Lottery profits go to public school education (K-12) in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2003 the Lottery turned over more than $375 million for education.
