Deal Me In: Splitstown revisited

6 April 2012
Dear Mark: In today's column, you discuss the answer to the question of splitting 10s. You touched on the subject of "putting your stellar hand in unwarranted jeopardy." I think that is the main reason not to split 10s, and although I recognize that any player’s actions have little effect on "taking the ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Whoever said you had to have fun?

30 March 2012
Dear Mark: Assume a gambler had the discipline to walk into a casino, sit down at the blackjack table, and make one $100 bet, win or lose, then walk away. Of course, the gambler would have enough money to cover any splits or double downs. Would that not be better than sitting there making $10 bets for several hours. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Never and always are princes among slippery terms

23 March 2012
Dear Mark: Why do some players on a blackjack table get all hot and bothered when I split 10s? I don’t do it every time, nor do I get a 20 hand very often. I never correct their play, like when the dealer is showing a six, and they hit a 12-16. Dan P. A number of players will go into a tizzy when you split 10s because they erroneously believe that you are “always” taking the dealer's bust card. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Brightening the cloudy slots scene

16 March 2012
Dear Mark: On a three-day casino trip, I was playing quarter slots and was down to my last $200 dollars. Instead of playing nickels, I played dollars, losing the remaining two hundred in just a few minutes. I thought that by increasing to dollars, especially on a machine with a sign above touting “best paybacks in the house,” I would get a better return. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Getting ignored by a touch screen

9 March 2012
Dear Mark: Here is a question from the Twilight Zone. My girlfriend and I play video slot machines side-by-side, but I have trouble activating the touch screen. She will switch machines with me and have no problem. I do not have cold, clammy hands, so should I not be able to activate the screen from the heat from my fingertips? Have you ever heard of anything this bizarre? Danny F. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: The only armed queen in the deck often delivered

2 March 2012
Dear Mark: A couple of years ago, I played Pai Gow at the Encore together with my wife and daughter. We were getting ready to leave, and only played an hour at this table. A male dealer was able to correctly identify pairs of Queens, Aces, etc. for several players. These five cards came out of a chute and were dealt face down. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Slot tournaments 101

24 February 2012
Dear Mark: Like many of your readers, I also enjoy slot tournaments. Does the casino ever leave the tournament chips in after the tournament, giving the player a real shot at taking down some serious cash? Gus R. No need to back up the F150 pickup truck to haul off 20,000 pounds of quarters on tournament ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Reading your way to riches

17 February 2012
Dear Mark: Can you recommend a book or two that outlines the proper strategy on video poker? Peter E. Video poker, Peter, is one of those rare casino games that can be beaten by the knowledgeable player. The game can often have a positive expectation on select machines, and can offer the player the chance ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Shopping list for the right blackjack setup

3 February 2012
Dear Mark: Please settle a disagreement between my brother and me. My brother thinks he has better odds against the house at blackjack playing out of a shoe with several decks. I think it is to the gambler's advantage to play at tables with a single deck. Please explain the reason for your answer. Wade J. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Round and round she goes

1 February 2012
Dear Mark: I liked your indifferent answer last week regarding system players trying to find trends on a roulette wheel based on previous numbers. I will agree, that numbers spun are random, but, isn’t there a system based on following the traits of the way a dealer spins the ball? Brett H. What your ... (read more)
