Deal Me In: Mucking has multiple meanings

19 July 2013
Dear Mark: I was catching up on my "required reading" and noticed your June 12 column concerning a poker irregularity. This reminded me of a question I have. Pick a game, any game. Consider a situation where, in the final round of betting, I have bet and been called. I show my cards and my opponent mucks. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Your chances of busting are not as great as you think

12 July 2013
Dear Mark: Why would my blackjack cheat sheet tell me to hit a pair of 6s when the dealer is showing a 2, and possibly bust, but it tells me to split those same 6s if the dealer is showing a 4-6? Tim R. A blackjack strategy card – your cheat sheet – is based on the mathematical probabilities of the game, ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Are casino-style social gaming slot machines trustworthy?

5 July 2013
Dear Mark: My wife has taken to the casino slot games on the Internet, not the money games, but the FREE games. Are these games regulated as to wins and loses similar to actual slots in a casino? John M. For anyone who likes the thrill of playing slot machines, the Internet offers you the opportunity to play any type of casino game that you can think of. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: A low house edge isn't necessarily the end-all, but it sure helps

28 June 2013
Dear Mark: When it really comes down to it, isn't, in the end-all, all about the house edge when it comes to winning and losing? Wayne L. All casino games, Wayne, fall into one of two categories. They are either games of luck or games of skill. In games of luck, the house edge is predetermined, so the opportunity to determine success is taken out of your hands. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Check your ticket!

21 June 2013
Dear Mark: I had an unfortunate experience at Harrah's Reno Casino and Hotel recently. Moving from a winning penny slot machine with a cash voucher for $50.17, I decided to play a quarter slot and inserted the voucher. The voucher was rejected, and I inserted it again, still rejected. I knew the $50.17 voucher was good and decided the slot must be malfunctioning. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: "Money plays!" revisited

14 June 2013
Dear Mark: I walked up to a blackjack game, put $100 in the betting circle, and said "money plays." The dealer said I had to change it into chips. I chose not to proceed with the wager. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Donald P. Back in the day when I pitched cardboard, your money could always play. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Card down!

12 June 2013
Dear Mark: I have a question regarding Robert's Rules of Poker. A player was playing a Texas Hold'em, 3-6 limit game. After going all in, he picked up his cards and one fell on the floor. I was the floor person and was called to the table. The dealer asked what the ruling is, and my response was, per Robert's Rules, the player must play the card. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: That good old 22

11 June 2013
Dear Mark: I enjoy reading your column every week in the Reno Gazette Journal. Last week, you wrote of your "walking out the door wager" on the roulette wheel. Something about it struck a chord in my memory, but I couldn't figure what it was. The next day it came to me -- Casablanca! In that famous movie ... (read more)

Deal Me In: It really was a pretty sweet gig

7 June 2013
Dear Mark: Currently, I am working two crummy jobs and was looking to go into the casino business. We have three casinos in close proximity to where I live. I hear that dealers make a decent living, which I am sure is more than I am making now. Should I make the leap into the casino business? Any advice you can give me based on your dealing experience would be appreciated. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: What's next?

31 May 2013
Dear Mark: I had not seen this subject mentioned in your column, and perhaps you know, but if not, I thought you would be interested in knowing about an "Ante" in the Indian casinos in Oklahoma. Before the dealing of each hand, the player must pay an "ante" fee, the minimum being fifty cents, and it escalates depending upon the size of one's bet. ... (read more)
