Deal Me In: Splitting 5s is where "never" applies

6 December 2013
Dear Mark: I got into disagreement with a player on a blackjack game over splitting 5s when the dealer was showing a six. Granted, I am no expert, but I told him he should never split 5s. Instead, he should double down. I posed the question to the dealer, and she stated they were not allowed to give advice. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Win/loss statement documents your play

29 November 2013
Dear Mark: Because I don’t keep track of my wins and losses when I play, my accountant has asked me for a win/loss statement from the casino where I play so I might be able to write off some of my gambling losses. How do I go about getting one? Jim D. When you use your player’s card, Jim, it documents your play. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Can a $50 bill ruin your day?

22 November 2013
Dear Mark: Do you know why $50 bills are unlucky in a casino? My husband will never accept them from a cashier, but can’t explain why except to say that they are jinxed. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Jackie H. The fifty-dollar bill ($50) is a denomination of United States currency that has the 18th U.S. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: I've been everywhere

15 November 2013
Dear Mark: I really enjoyed your column called “Vegas on the Cheap.” Yes, every place that I gamble does offer other forms of entertainment besides losing money. I am curious as to what are your favorite places to go where they offer gambling, but not for the sake of gambling itself? Alan R. As Johnny Cash ... (read more)

Deal Me In: A no-brainer

8 November 2013
Dear Mark: Is there a casino game offered that has a very low house edge, but at the same time you don’t need the skills of a professional gambler to play the game? Alex M. The game that offers little use of any gray matter, and a low house edge to boot is either baccarat, or for the low roller, mini-baccarat. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Bob knows slots

1 November 2013
Dear Mark: It is hard to believe you when you say that the casino cannot adjust the slot percentages on slots on weekends. It seems I lose more often on weekends than any other time. Please explain to me one more time why I am wrong. Scott E. Even though I was in a casino management position to make a ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Vegas on the cheap

25 October 2013
Dear Mark: It would never have occurred to me to e-mail you except I am reading your column in today's Detroit Free Press and I see a non-gambler wrote you to say how much he enjoys your column. Ditto for me! However, I do want to tell you that my wife and I love to go to Las Vegas at least once a year. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: If the shoe fits, you don't have to wear it

18 October 2013
Dear Mark: I favor the joints out West where I can still find a hand-pitched game of blackjack. Even with an occasional “card down” or “one hand on the cards, please,” I prefer it to the salvo of a shoe dealt game. I’ve been to Atlantic City a few times and can’t find anyone pitching cardboard. All I find are shoes that don’t fit me, and I don’t like to limp. ... (read more)

Deal Me In: 100x odds are going, going ... gone!

11 October 2013
Dear Mark: Do you know where in Las Vegas they still offer 100x odds in craps? Steve K. I recently tweeted (you can follow me at @markpilarski) that the Casino Royale and Hotel in Las Vegas was the last casino to offer 100x odds on its crap games. Well, Steve, "Bonsoir, elle est partie!" or French for "So ... (read more)

Deal Me In: Gambling goodies from the grave?

4 October 2013
Dear Mark: A friend of mine recently passed away. He had a large amount of casino comps. Do they go into his estate and to his heirs? Bob M. In its strictest form, Bob, a "will" is limited to real property while a "testament" applies to the disposition of personal property. So, is the distribution of your ... (read more)
