Mark Pilarski Gaming Guru - Page 10Deal Me In: Yo Levine the Dancing Queen19 December 2014
Dear Mark: When playing craps, I will occasionally toss in a bet for the dealers. Normally, it is a two-way “Yo,” or a Horn bet if I am making the same. What are your thoughts on these two bets for the dealer, or is there another bet that dealers appreciate even more? Chase D. All dealers welcome ANY wager ... (read more)
Deal Me In: A freebie can be had just by asking12 December 2014
Dear Mark: About 25 years ago I met you when you were a pit boss on the South Shore at a Lake Tahoe casino. I remember asking you if I could have a deck of cards and you said, OK, just so long as you answer a trivia question correctly. I do not remember what the question was, but I do remember that I did NOT get it right. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Husband penalized for canny play28 November 2014
Dear Mark: I play penny slots, and my husband plays $5 blackjack. If that is unavailable he will play on a $1 slot machine. We each use our own comp cards. What is interesting is that we do not equal out on comp points. I always get more points than my husband does. His complaint is that he always plays on a higher-denomination machine or at a $5 blackjack game. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Who watches them? Them being the casino21 November 2014
Dear Mark: I know that you have clearly stated multiple times in your column that casinos do not cheat. I am still leery of your belief. I guess my question is, who monitors the casino that their slot machines are on the up-and-up? Jared J. Every state that offers land-based casinos has some form of gaming ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Plan on a long dry spell between top-line jackpots14 November 2014
Dear Mark: Can you explain to me why I no longer get anywhere near the number of top slot jackpots that I once got in the past? Sandra R. By past, Sandra, I am assuming that your slot play consisted of the “old style” reel machines. Those machines had physical limitations as to the number of reels and stops per reel, which created a limited number of possible outcomes. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Is Chuck-a-luck worth chucking?7 November 2014
Dear Mark: I have some recollection of a casino table game that featured a metal cage in the shape of an hourglass that contained three large dice. The dealer would invert the cage causing the dice to tumble and come to rest, revealing the winning combination. The game had some resemblance to three-card poker with payoffs based on the outcome. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Is Free Bet Blackjack really a freebie?31 October 2014
Dear Mark: We have a casino a little north of Toronto, Ontario that has added one blackjack table with some variations. If you get a hard 9, 10 or 11, the House will double down for you. Also, if you get a split opportunity, the house will double down for you. If the dealer total is 22, it's a push. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Patience is needed for volatile bonus video poker machines24 October 2014
Dear Mark: When it comes to video poker games, which do you prefer, Jacks-or-Better, or one of the many Bonus games that are offered? I am figuring it is Jacks-or-Better as you use it as an example more often than not. John P. There are multiple reasons, John, why I use the same ole Jacks-or-Better machines as an example in this column. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: Never shortchange yourself with this betting opportunity17 October 2014
Dear Mark: Is there an appropriate time to “double for less” at blackjack? I do it occasionally, but I am beginning to feel that it isn’t worth the hassle that I get from fellow players and sometimes even the dealer. Doug D. When players double for less, they are doubling down for under their original wager. ... (read more)
Deal Me In: What's in your wallet?10 October 2014
Dear Mark: My usual betting system in craps is to play the Pass Line with full odds and then follow it up with two Come bets with full odds. On a recent trip to Las Vegas, I tried a new system after having read a book that recommended playing the Pass Line with odds, and then placing the 6 and 8. (If the point is 6, place the 5. ...
