Compulsive Gambler?

19 November 2000

One question I often get asked when people find out I am a gambler is, "Are you a compulsive gambler?" I've lost count of the number of women who have tried to "save" me. I learned long ago it was inadvisable to explain that I have a system, because all gamblers have a system. The general public does not understand the difference between a scientific system, such as card-counting, and a system based on astrology. And why should they? I don't know much about interior decoration or fish-gutting.

Just occasionally I get somebody really zealous who wants to pursue the issue. This is very common amongst religious young girls. At this point it is better to stop evading the question and meet it head on with an explanation of the facts. The truth is: I don't have the pathology of a compulsive gambler. I do not gamble for enjoyment. I play only when conditions are excellent and I believe I have the advantage. I do not play when I am tired. I do not borrow money to fund my gambling and I never take my credit card with me to the casino, just in case I should get tempted. I do not play to get even. I never let emotion cloud my judgement when gambling. I never let gambling interfere with the welfare of people dear to me. Gambling does not interfere with my sleep. I have never considered self-destructive activity as a result of gambling. Emotional turmoil in other areas of my life does not create an urge within me to gamble.

Frequently I take long periods lasting several months away from the casino. Most important of all, I never make negative expectation wagers.

I monitor my own behaviour continually for signs of compulsive gambling.

At this point, most people give up. I don't know if it's because I have convinced them or because they just get tired trying to convince me.

Compulsive gambling is, however, a serious problem with terrible social consequences. Re-read this article carefully and honestly to make sure compulsive gambling is not affecting you.
