Based upon a sampling of snail-mail and e-mail inquiries from readers in
recent weeks, there seems to be a lot of interest in Let It Ride. I
explored the game in this column some years ago, but perhaps it’s time
to take another look.
Let It Ride is a poker hybrid that’s played at a blackjack-style table. ... (read more)

Slots Can Bring Out the Worst in Gamblers14 May 2002
I think it's rather strange that slot machines, more than any other game in casinos, including video poker, often brings out the worst in gamblers. You'd think that more arguments would erupt at the table games where players have an opportunity to interact. Playing the slots is a solitary betting proposition that people can play on their own terms, at their own price, at their own pace. ... (read more)
New Television Show Hits Jackpot7 May 2002
A vast audience of recreational gambling enthusiasts has been cultivated in the Chicago-area the past decade. Casual players who used to restrict their gaming ventures to Las Vegas once or twice each year have the convenience of casino action in their own backyards any day, virtually any time. Going hand in ... (read more)
Tournaments as a Casino Marketing Tool30 April 2002
Casinos in smaller gaming jurisdictions as well as the locals-oriented properties in Las Vegas all use very imaginative marketing campaigns as a way to reward their regular players, encourage product loyalty, and maintain a competitive edge. Here in the Chicago-area gambling market where demand exceeds supply, there is very little need for aggressive marketing campaigns. ... (read more)

Phase One of the new permanent dockside gaming facility that opened last month in Aurora, Illinois, has created a climate for Chicago-area casino gamblers similar to Harrah's Joliet but one that will definitely have a personality all its own once Phase Two is completed this summer. Hollywood Casino ... (read more)
Hollywood Casino Aurora Goes Dockside9 April 2002
Hollywood Casino Aurora became the second Chicago-area riverboat gambling property to go dockside with the grand opening on Feb. 15 of the first phase of its $78.2 million permanent single-level casino project. The attractive new casino replaces the smaller of Hollywood's sister gaming vessels, the City of Lights II. ... (read more)
If I Owned a Casino2 April 2002
Instead of just griping about things we don't like, or wishing for
changes and improvements that never seem to happen, it's nice to
fantasize at times about what we'd do if we were the boss.
Allow me to put on my Walter Mitty cap for today's column and explain
how I'd run things if I owned a casino. ... (read more)
Old Game with a New Twist26 March 2002
Another variation of the tried and true game of casino blackjack is making the rounds in Las Vegas and it seems to be creating quite a stir even among traditionalists. The game is called "Super Fun 21 Single Deck." I'm wondering that if it continues its popularity how long it will take before a ... (read more)
