The Slot Machine Twilight Zone

1 October 2003
I'd like to share with you an intriguing tale about my wife's visit to the slot machine Twilight Zone at the new Argosy's Empress Casino Joliet the evening of Saturday, May 31. Since a vast majority of recreational casino gamblers play the slots, I thought it would make for interesting as well as informative reading. ... (read more)

Tough Feeling Sorry for Illinois Casinos

24 September 2003
The new tax structure for Illinois' nine existing casino license holders went into effect July 1. The legislation calls for a tax on casino revenues that tops out at 70 percent and a $5.00 admission tax. Casino owners and operators are outraged. A majority of the casinos in Illinois are publicly held companies which are accountable to stock holders. ... (read more)

John G. Brokopp Reviews Owning Mahowny

17 September 2003
There have been many movies made about addictions of all sorts. The most memorable one for me was the 1945 classic, The Lost Weekend, starring Ray Milland and directed by Billy Wilder. Milland stars as an alcoholic who hits rock bottom during a series of tortured events that take place during a fateful weekend in New York City. ... (read more)

27 August 2003
Last week's column was devoted to the cashless slot machine technology to which casinos in gaming jurisdictions around the country are converting. In addition to being a cost-cutting strategy for the casinos, players can also use the revolutionary system to increase their chances of leaving a winner. ... (read more)

Ready for EZ Pay? You Bet We Are!

20 August 2003
I'll admit to giving cashless slot machine technology a lukewarm reception when it was first introduced to selected casinos in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. Silencing the sounds of coins cascading into trays and experiencing the joy of scooping them into buckets and marching to the cashier seemed to be one of the simpler pleasures of a casino outing. ... Argosy's Empress Gets That "Vegas" Feel

13 August 2003
If not for the fact Harrah's Joliet Casino and the Hollywood Casino Aurora preceded it in opening permanently docked facilities, the opening of the new Argosy's Empress Casino & Hotel in Joliet would be much more spectacular news than it is. After more than a decade of casino ... (read more)
