Reading for Gaming Fans

11 May 2000

If you enjoy recreational casino gambling, it's always fun to sit back once in a while with a good book devoted to your hobby. The proliferation of gaming across the United States has precipitated an abundance of new titles in recent years. Today let's take a look at a couple of books on my gaming bookshelf:

Gaming columnist, lecturer, and author John Grochowski's latest offering is titled The Slot Machine Answer Book, published by Bonus Books, Inc. of Chicago. It's a follow-up to the author's entertaining and informative The Casino Answer Book.

If you're a dedicated slot machine player or just a casual one, you'll find The Slot Machine Answer Book very entertaining and in some respects, revealing. Grochowski takes you through the ins and outs of slot machine play using the question-and-answer format that proved so successful in The Casino Answer Book.

If you're a real student of "electronic gaming devices" you'll discover no revelations that you probably already didn't know. However, if you really want to know exactly what you're up against when you play the slots, the book brings it all out in concise and easy-to-read fashion.

The Slot Machine Answer Book is a great read for the slot player in your family. It'll not only make you well-informed by providing accurate facts and information about the games, but the 165-page paperback also is filled with fun and entertaining facts.

Another new gaming book is Casino Games Made Easy by the Las Vegas- based gaming consultant and author, Victor H. Royer. The 320-page paperback is published by Premier Publishing of Las Vegas, Nevada.

This work takes the reader through a "how to" tour of slot machines, video poker, and all the table games. Unlike many other gaming writers, Royer tends to deviate from the facts and the mathematics of casino play by interjecting a lot of personal opinion based upon his experience as a player. It can make for some interesting reading if you like to play the games, but you almost must take some of what he says with a grain of salt.

Royer is well intentioned and seems to write for the recreational gaming enthusiast from the perspective of a professional gambler. He may take some factual liberties on some topics, but you'll also pick up a lot of pointers. His new book could very well be included in your gaming bookshelf, but I wouldn't recommend it as the only book you read on the subjects of slots, video poker, and table games.
