Potawatomi Makes Slot Play a Team Sport7 April 2010
The spring leagues that have been forming in Milwaukee are not just about the sport of bowling for which the city is famous. Thanks to Potawatomi Bingo Casino, avid slot players who take their past time seriously can get together in Beer Town for Slot Leagues starting April 12. This imaginative promotion, a first in the Midwest, is complimentary and open to all participants who sign up for free membership in the casino's Fire Keepers Club. "It is a concept that is unique to this part of the country," said Nancy Ziolkowski, who came on board as Potawatomi's casino marketing director six months ago. "As everyone knows, leagues are popular in the Milwaukee region, and we are delighted to bring this exciting brand of team play to our slot players." A total of $29,000 in cash will be distributed as weekly and end-of-season awards during the course of the competition, which runs every Monday through May 10. Here's how it works: Assemble a group of four players plus one alternate. Once you've selected a team name and a captain, sign up at the Fire Keeper's Club booth any time from April 5 until 6:00 p.m. on April 12. Following registration, your team will be assigned to a bracket and a division. Teams must check in by 6:00 p.m. for the start of competition on April 12, at which time they'll be given a playing time and the names of the teams they'll be matched up against. Starting times are 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. A total of 20 teams will play each hour. There are four rounds per hour. One member of each team will play during each round. The competition will take place on a special carousel of tournament machines. Teams will compete for match points, which are earned each time a player outscores their opponent. There are a total of five match points that can be earned per hour, with the first four awarded during the rounds and the fifth awarded to the team with the higher cumulative total. A weekly log with team statistics will be posted at the Fire Keepers Club booth in the Grand Lobby and on the casino's official website, www.paysbig.com. Weekly awards will include $500 for a weekly team drawing, $500 for the high score team of the week, and $500 for a team spirit award. The top two teams from each division at the conclusion of the regular season will meet in the play-offs at 7:00 p.m. on May 17. A wild card drawing at 6:30 p.m. will give teams that did not advance the chance to participate. The championship team will receive $5,000, with three $2,000 awards going to finalists and four $1,000 awards going to the semi-finalists. There will also be 10 $400 team awards for the first round play-offs. In addition, special awards will be given, including one $1,000 prize for the high team score of the season and one $500 award for the high individual score of the season. There will also be a $1,000 season spirit award for the team with the most spirit, based on a list of criteria to be judged by a group of employees at Potawatomi. "We invite our participants to really take ownership of their teams by coming up with exciting team names, wearing team shirts much like bowlers do, and bringing along with them a real competitive spirit and style," Ziolkowski said. Participants must be at least 21 years of age. Space is limited to the first 40 teams that register on a first-come, first-served basis.
