Casinos Can Play by New Rules in TV Advertising19 September 2000
You may have seen them: The Harrah's ads on TV depicting something never before seen in television advertising. People gambling! The road to this new brand of casino advertising was paved by the U.S. Supreme Court in June when it ruled that the long-time government ban on television ads depicting gambling violated the right to free speech guaranteed under the constitution. Under the ban, casino advertising on TV could not depict people actually gambling, such as playing a slot machine, rolling the dice, or being dealt cards. Only veiled references to gambling could be made by showing people enjoying the fun and excitement that a casino can offer. Now the federal government will no longer prohibit broadcasters from airing ads that show people gambling or that display gambling odds, even in the 39 states where casino gambling is illegal, so long as the ads are truthful and not misleading.
