Best Is Yet to Come at Horseshoe's Big Poker Tournament27 October 2010
The two showcase tournaments of the World Series of Poker Circuit Event at Horseshoe Casino Hammond could very well be opportunities for fans of the game to do some star gazing. Both the 3-day No Limit Hold'em Main Event, which started Friday (Oct. 22), and the 4-day No Limit Hold'em Regional Championship, which kicked off on Monday (Oct. 25), possess components which make them attractive to high profile professional players. "All of the circuit events are being tied together so that there's a player point system and multiple ways to qualify for the national championship in Las Vegas right before the 2011 World Series of Poker," explained Jason Newman, Horseshoe's poker room manager. "The national championship is a million dollar prize pool and it's a bracelet event. "The World Series of Poker is one of the most celebrated and distinguished gaming events in the world. We feel that this new format and the addition of televised coverage will create an added layer of excitement and competition for our players." The No Limit Hold'em Main Event is a $1,600 buy-in instead of the $5,000 buy-in it was last year in an effort to get more players involved, prompting Newman to say: "It's going to be a fantastic event that will blow the numbers out of the water." Horseshoe is one of four stops on the tour that has a regional championship. It has a buy-in of $10,000, but there is a lot at stake for big-name pros and other players who take the game seriously. "The regional championship event is going to bring the pros and people who are recognizable because of the buy-in and because it is on television,' Newman said. "For us it's great, the best of both worlds." The final nine players in each regional will be awarded automatic seats in the national championship, which will be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in May of 2011, shortly before the start of the World Series of Poker. The event will be televised nationally. There are four different ways to qualify for the 100 seats that will be awarded for the $1-million tournament. In addition to a cash prize, the winner will receive a WSOP gold championship bracelet, the first time in history the coveted hardware will be awarded outside of the annual World Series of Poker competition in Las Vegas and the annual WSOP Europe in London. Horseshoe's poker spectacular is being held in the casino's multi-faceted showroom, The Venue, but there is room to open more tables to meet the demands. "We have our poker room when needed," Newman said. "There are a couple of lower buy-in events that have some added promotions, including seats to the $10,000 regional championship, which could easily attract large groups. Essentially any event that attracts over 1,000 players we will have our poker room to fall back on if necessary." Registration hours through the conclusion of Horseshoe's two-week circuit event, which wraps up on Thursday (Oct. 28), are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in The Venue.
