Norman's Good Times in Las Vegas

2 July 2022
Norman writes: Hi Jerry, I was in Vegas the first week of March and you are right about things becoming more expensive. I also noticed the disappearance of favorable odds and pay tables in a couple of the casinos. As one example, I have gone to Ellis Island for a lot of years for one evening to enjoy their barbecue ribs and play 8/5 bonus poker. ... (read more)

More Questions on Low Pairs versus Inside Straights

25 June 2022
Here is a follow-up question to the previous low pair versus inside straight strategy. Thank you, Jerry "Stickman" I have a follow-on question. If it were an outside straight, I was trying for, would it change the decision? Say I was dealt 9, 9,10, J, Q. Would I still hold the low pair or would I go for ... (read more)

Another Big Reader Question

18 June 2022
Hi Stickman, I just wanted to comment on your column about the 2 hands in 9/6 JoB. The 2 hands were Kd Ah Td 8h 2h where we hold Ace-King and 2s Jh Qs 4h Th where we hold Jack-Queen. I always play the 2 high cards in the situations you showed, so I got it right. What I didn't know was how close the choices were. ... (read more)

Answering a Reader's Questions

11 June 2022
Hey Stickman, What is your opinion on these hands? Super Bonus Aces poker (or whatever it's called) -- you get A A A 2 and a useless card like a 7. Dump both the 2 and 7 or just the 7? Next, say you get 2 2 2 A 7. What is the proper play with this hand? Now, how about in Deuces Wild? Say you get Ah, Kh, Qh, Jh and a 2. ... (read more)

Low Pair versus Inside Straight

28 May 2022
Hello Stickman, I like and appreciate your columns in Casino City Times Guru. I read your "how to play" articles and low hands challenge me. In PA, lucky to find 1,2,3,4,5,7 with 7 on the full house. So many times, I have low cards for an inside straight. A hand such as, say 5,6, 8, 9 of different suits. ... (read more)

Is Pick'em Poker the Game for You?

21 May 2022
Most video poker fans prefer variations of draw poker. These include Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, Double-Double Bonus Poker and Bonus Poker Deluxe. Others prefer video poker games that have wild cards, such as Deuces Wild, and Jokers Wild. All of these games deal five cards. The player selects which cards to keep, and then draws replacement cards. ... (read more)

The 8/5 versus 7/5 Debate

14 May 2022
Stickman, Consider this hand: 9, T, J, Q, 9 unsuited. The right play on a Jacks or Better, or 8/5 Bonus Poker game is to hold the low pair over a four-card open-ended straight. However, on 7/5 Bonus Poker, why is that incorrect? Why on 7/5 Bonus Poker is a four-card open-ended straight preferable to a low pair? Dan Hi Dan, That is a very good question. ... (read more)

Video Poker Facts and Myths

7 May 2022
As with almost all things that have been with us for a while, myths develop. Some myths are based on fact, others are based on the way the human mind thinks the facts should be. Video Poker myths have been around since shortly after the introduction of the first video poker machines. Some myths no longer are relevant since the technology on which they were based has been replaced. ... (read more)

Probability of Getting a Video-Poker Royal Flush

30 April 2022
One of the reasons for the popularity of Video Poker is it generally has a high payback – sometimes even more than 100 percent for a skilled player. Regardless of which Video Poker game you play, achieving the long-term payback percentage is dependent on getting your fair share of “natural” (those without the aid of a wild card) royal flushes. ... Bonus Poker Quiz

23 April 2022
This time the same hand is examined for different pay tables of the same game. The game is Bonus Poker. The full-pay version of this game is 8/5 (8-for-1 for a full house and 5-for-1 for a flush). This game/pay table combination returns 99.17 percent with perfect play. It is getting more difficult to find ... (read more)
