Super Double Bonus Video Poker

21 August 2021

I received the following question about Super Double Bonus video poker strategy from Jody,

Hi Stickman,

Hoping all is well on your end.

I have some Super Double Bonus Video Poker questions for you.

I am dealt the Js, Jh, Kd, Kh, 7s.

Should I hold a pair only when the full house pays 40-for-5?
Should I hold the two pairs when the full house pays 45-for-5?
Is 40-for-5 the standard payout for a full house in this particular game?

Note: With the pay schedule I have, a full house would pay out 40-for-5. This schedule also pays out 600-for-5 for quad Jacks or quad Kings.

Thanks for your help again.

Best wishes,

Jody

Hi Jody,

Let’s take a look at the hand and the pay tables you mention.

First the game that pay 45-for-5 for a full house and 600-for-5 for four kings or four jacks. The total return of this game is 99.695 percent – not a bad return.

The top-paying holds are:

1) The Js, Jh, Kd, Kh. This hold, on average, returns 8.40425 credits for the five credits played.

2) Either the Js, Jh or the Kd, Kh. Either of these holds, on average, returns 8.2103 credits for the five credits played.

3) Any other hold returns significantly less and should not be considered.

Now let’s look at the game that pays 40-for-5 for a full house and 600-for-5 for four kings or four jacks. The total return of this game is 98.686 percent – not quite as good as above, but that is to be expected.

The top-paying holds are:

1) Either the Js, Jh or the Kd, Kh. Either of these holds, on average, returns 8.1582 credits for the five credits played.

2) The Js, Jh, Kd, Kh. This hold, on average, returns 7.9787 credits for the five credits played.

3) Any other hold returns significantly less and should not be considered.

You were absolutely correct in the holds you suggested. As you apparently knew, altering the pay for the full house definitely changes the best hold.

As far as the most common pay for a full house, from what I have observed, the 40-for-5 and even the 35-for-5 pays for the full house tend to be more common than the 45-for-5 pay.

Hey, the casinos have to make money to stay in business, you know. They have had a really tough year also. ??

As always, may all your wins be swift and large, and your losses be slow and tiny.
