Consider Bonus Video Poker

30 July 2022

Many novices and experienced video poker players prefer the game of Jacks or Better. This game has a low variance (meaning milder swings in the bankroll), and a relatively simple playing strategy. It was also traditionally easy to find and had a good return.

Unfortunately, things have changed – especially after COVID-19 decimated the casinos' bottom line. Pay tables for Jacks or Better games have been drastically lowered – if the game can even be found. Many casinos have completely eliminated the game.

What is a self-respecting video poker player to do?

Sure, there are other games such as Double-Double Bonus, Triple Bonus and others still available. There are even some that have tolerable pay tables. These games have a relatively-to-ridiculously high variance. This means a larger bankroll is required to weather longer and steeper losing streaks. Theses games also have a more complex playing strategy which makes proper play in a casino more difficult.

For those players who prefer the low variance games, Bonus Poker is still available at most casinos. Decent pay tables for bonus poker can also be found in most casinos.

For example, 8/5 (8-for-1 for a full house and 5-for-1 for a flush) Bonus Poker pay tables return to the player 99.17 percent of the total amount played. Of course, this an average over time and requires playing the optimal strategy. The variance is also very low at 20.9. For comparison, full-pay (9/6) Jacks or Better games return 99.54 percent and have a variance of 19.5.

The Double-Double Bonus game with a 9/6 pay table returns 98.98 percent and has a variance of 41.9. Triple Bonus with a 10/7 pay table returns 98.52 percent and has a variance of 45.0.

In addition to a good return and a low variance, Bonus Poker has a relatively simple playing strategy. It is very similar to the Jacks or Better playing strategy. This makes it easy to learn, especially for a skilled Jacks or Better player.

For those of you who prefer a low variance game such as Jacks or Better and are having difficulty locating a playable game, Bonus Poker can be a great alternative.

Give it some serious consideration.

As always, may all your wins be swift and large, and your losses be slow and small.
