Casino Survey Part 7: Why Play What You Play?

28 September 2024

Casinos have a wide range of games designed to attract nearly every type of gambler. Since there is such a variety, I thought it might be interesting to survey casino goers to find out their favorite games and why they play them.

This is the sixth article in a series of articles that explores this topic.

Responses from a recent casino sampling.

Judy from Wisconsin:

“I expect I was like most people when they first play at casinos. I started out playing slot machines. They were fun for a while – but mostly they were easy to play. I also did not have to worry about other people like at table games.

“Gradually the fun wore off. Slot play became a little boring. I also seemed to lose everything I brought with me very quickly.

“I started looking at other games in the casino. I realized that other than the big wheel, other games would require some knowledge of how to play the game.

“Aso, I must admit that I was a little scared of playing at a table game. I did not want to make any mistakes and become the target of other player’s anger.”

“I started researching table games that were available in the casino. I learned that blackjack can have a low house edge, but it depends on the house rules. I learned what to look for in a good game. I learned that a 6-5 payoff for a blackjack means there is a hefty house edge, so I know to avoid those games.

“I spent a good deal of time learning basic blackjack strategy. I did not even try to learn how to count cards as it is more work than I am willing to do.

“Next, I spent some time in the casino watching players actually play at the blackjack tables. I wanted to be comfortable with the nuances of play and not stand out as a newbie once I sat down. I learned how to buy in, how to signal a hit, stand, split, and double down.”

“Once I was comfortable with everything, I sat down at a table that had a good game, bought in, and began playing.

“Blackjack has been my go-to game in a casino ever since then. It is much more fun than slots. It is also much less costly (if I can find a low-stakes game)."

What about you? What casino games do you like to play – and why?

As always, may all your wins be swift and large, and your losses be slow and small.
