Palms Pulls Football Ad

21 August 2003

LAS VEGAS --The Palms plans to pull a radio spot advertising its football contest after a top Nevada gaming regulator said he planned to investigate a claim made in the ad.

"At the Palms your chances are better than anywhere else," the man who won last year's contest says in the commercial advertising the Flamingo Road property's $400,000 Pigskin Payoff.

Palms marketing director Sheri Long said Wednesday afternoon that the boutique property's intent was to make clear that a contest competitor would have a better chance to win in the Palms contest than in the contests held by locals operators Station Casinos and Coast Casinos.

Both Station and Coast contests accept entries for their respective million-dollar contests at six Las Vegas-area locations, while the Palms will have a lot fewer entrants at its single location, Long said.

But the advertisement said the chances were better "than anywhere else," a claim Long admitted the property couldn't prove.

She said the Palms would record a new version of the commercial as soon as possible to avoid the unsubstantiated claim.

"We don't want to be misleading," she said. "We'll change it."

Long's comments came after Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander said the regulatory agency would investigate the Palms advertisement.

The board routinely investigates advertising claims to verify their truthfulness.

"This sounds somewhat like the 'loosest slot' claim," Neilander said. "I don't know what data (the Palms) would use to (make that claim). We'll take a look at it."
