WTO's Final Ruling: US Owes $21.1 Million per Year

21 December 2007

A World Trade Organization arbitration panel has awarded Antigua and Barbuda $21.1 million per year in its dispute with the United States over U.S. laws against Internet gambling. Neither the duration of the payments nor whether they are retroactive was disclosed in the initial announcement.

Antigua asked for US$3.4 billion in retaliatory sanctions in the form of intellectual property rights, while the U.S. Trade Representative said $500,000 was a more reasonable number. Regardless, the United States cannot appeal the sanctions level awarded today.

Antigua's lead legal counsel on the case, Mark Mendel, is hosting a press conference later today discuss the ruling and its implications.

IGN will report further details following the press conference.
