NSW Government Postpones Launch of Pay TV

8 January 2008

The government of New South Wales has postponed attempts by Tabcorp to launch Australia's first pay-TV wagering operation onto NSW screens.

Tabcorp in June partnered with interactive TV production company Two Way Ltd. and Foxtel Networks with the hopes that viewers would be able to start using the service by the end of 2007 or beginning of 2008.

But Two Way was told on Monday by Minister for Gaming and Racing Graham West that approval had been delayed because he wished to review the state's wagering regulations before giving the green light to the service, according to local media reports.

The delay means the service may not launch until late this year, if not the very end, said Two Way CEO Ben Reichel.

"This decision in NSW is disappointing," Reichel said, adding that the company now plans to move forward to launch the service in Victoria, although the matter is currently under consideration by Victorian regulators.
