In Waning Days of Bush Administration, Antigua, U.S. Return to Negotiation Table

With only six days remaining in the Bush administration, representatives from Antigua and Barbuda arrived in Washington, D.C., Wednesday hoping to complete negotiations stemming from a five-year dispute with the United States government over Internet gambling.

L. Errol Cort, Antigua's finance minister, told the Antigua Sun Wednesday he feels they are in a good position to reach an agreement with American trade officials over the United States' withdrawal from the General Agreement on Trade in Services.

But if an amicable resolution is not reached this week, he said, Antigua would have to start from scratch with members of the incoming Obama administration after Inauguration Day next week.

Neither Mark E. Mendel, counsel for Antigua, nor the office of the United States trade representative could be reached for comment Wednesday.
