Station Casinos launching mobile sports wagering app in time for football season

29 July 2013

LAS VEGAS -- Station Casinos, Inc. is launching a sports wagering application for mobile devices, but the casino operator doesn’t believe the activity will take away business from the company’s sports books.

The application, Sports Connection Mobile, allows Station Casinos’ customers to place wagers on sporting events through mobile phones and tablet PCs.

The application recently completed a field trial with Nevada gaming regulators. During that trial period, the application was promoted only within the company’s 16 Southern Nevada casinos.

With the test period completed, Station Casinos plans to launch an areawide marketing effort to promote the application in time for the fall football season.

“I think this is fantastic for the growth potential of the sports wagering industry,” said Station Casinos Vice President of Sports Book Operations Art Manteris.

The casino company is following sports book operators William Hill and Cantor Gaming into the market with mobile wagering technology.

Nevada gaming regulations allow customers can place wagers on sports through the mobile devices as long as player is physically located within Nevada.

Station Casinos’ application is attached to the company’s player rewards program, which Manteris said an advantage over other mobile wagering applications.

Customers will earn points for all wagers placed on the mobile application and can redeem those points inside Station Casinos properties.

“That’s a big difference because it ties our application to our casinos,” said Manteris, one the gaming industry’s longest-serving sports book operators.

Manteris wouldn’t provide a figure on how much the mobile application could mean to Station Casinos sports wagering revenues, but he said customers will still visit the company’s sports books to wager, especially major events and the college and professional football season.

“There is still nothing like watching the event in one of our books,” Manteris said. “But we know that sometimes life gets in the way. The application keeps a customer in the game.”

Sports Connection Mobile is available on smartphone devices and tablets, including the Android, iPhone and iPad as well as through the company’s Sports Connection Intranet product.

In order to enroll, players must be 21 or older and sign up in a Station Casinos’ sports book or at the El Cortez with valid identification and a $50 deposit.

Using betting lines set by Station Casinos, wagers may be placed on all major sports through application with a minimum bet of $5. Accounts may be reloaded with cash, credit or debit card in person. Wagers include parlay cards, straight bets, teasers, prop bets, round robins and in-game wagering.

Station Casinos Vice President of Gaming Systems John Vidmar said the application met all the regulatory and security requirements of virtual gaming set by state.
