How to calculate the casino's edge in blackjack

26 May 2002
I often get inquiries from casino players that want to know what the casino edge is for a specific blackjack game that they may have seen in a casino. In this article, I will show you how you can go about doing this on your own using several different tools. One way to compute the casino's edge is to use ... (read more)

Splitting 10s

25 April 2002
There are two types of blackjack players that split a pair of 10s. One type is the casual player that has no idea what the right playing strategies are for blackjack. The other is the pro that knows the game inside and out. How can splitting 10s be bad for the casual player and good for the pro? Read on and I'll explain. ... (read more)

Blackjack side bets revisited

24 March 2002
It's been awhile since I reviewed blackjack side bets. Since then there has been a proliferation of new bets, so I decided to take another look at them. Since casinos do not have big margins on their blackjack tables, they often try to offer these side bets to boost profits. For example, some side bets ... (read more)

More reader questions on blackjack

1 February 2002
I observed a blackjack player make a bet on fellow player's hand. Is this common and will the casinos allow this? I wouldn't say this is a common practice and as far as I know casinos permit this as long as the player approves of someone else betting on his hand. I've actually made bets on another player's hand if I see a player hesitating to double down on an obvious double down play. ... (read more)

Continuous shufflers revisited

18 November 2001
Many casinos have installed continuous shuffling machines (CSM) on their blackjack tables. These machines are a combination shuffler and dealing shoe that contain 4 (or sometimes 5) decks of cards. The dealer deals the cards from this device and then after one or several rounds picks up the discards and ... (read more)

Readers' blackjack questions

26 October 2001
I continue to receive a lot of good questions from readers, so I decided to share with you some of their questions and my answers. "When playing in a six-deck shoe that allows late surrender, it is proper to surrender on 15 vs. a 10. But if the 15 consists of a 7 and 8 we should hit. Why?" The specific ... (read more)

Blackjack myths debunked

12 September 2001
Which of the following statements about blackjack is true? You should always take insurance or even money when you are dealt a blackjack. Unskilled players will hurt other players' chances. It's impossible to count cards in multiple-deck games. Surprise! All of the above statements are FALSE, yet if I polled typical blackjack players, most would have said the above statements are true. ... (read more)

Is card counting legal?

1 June 2001
This is one of the questions most often asked of me by casino players. But before I give the answer, let me briefly explain what card counting is all about for readers who may not be familiar with it. Card counting is a system that allows players to keep track of certain cards played. You are not memorizing every card like Rain Man; rather you count only certain cards. ... (read more)

Basics of blackjack tournaments

23 March 2001
More and more casinos are offering blackjack tournaments, especially during the slower winter months. They can be fun, but before you enter, it's best that you know the basics of how to play blackjack under tournament conditions. Tournaments work like this. ... (read more)

29 January 2001
Blackjack without paper or plastic cards? Impossible, you say? Guess again, as technologists have married the casino game of blackjack with advanced digital technology and state-of-the-art electronics to create the modular Digital 21 blackjack gaming system. And it's going to be playing soon at a casino near you. ... (read more)
