Over the past seven years I spend some of my time in casinos playing video poker (the rest, playing blackjack). Why video poker? Because I can get the edge in video poker and make money as I have done playing blackjack. Here's how I did it.
There are three important steps to become a skilled video poker player. ... (read more)
Blackjack myths revisited18 September 2009
The myths of blackjack are alive and well. No matter where I go, when the conversation turns to blackjack players ask me about the same myths that have been repeated umpteen hundred times over the past 50 years. So I thought it would benefit readers if I once again reviewed the common myths and fallacies about the game to set the record straight. ... (read more)
Blackjack fact or fiction?4 September 2009
Are the following statements about blackjack facts, or are they fiction? Referring to a strategy card when you play blackjack is perfectly legal. Sometimes it pays to discard a winning hand in video poker7 August 2009
This is a true story that happened to my father-in-law, Pete. I've written about him before and his love of video poker. At age 90 he is, in fact, one tough player. Calculating cash back29 May 2009
One of the perks you get if you are a machine player (slots or video poker) is
cash back. This is a reward you get from the casino for your loyalty as a player. It's important for you to understand how to get the cash back, and also how to calculate it because it is not the same from one casino to another.

Splitting aces and eights22 May 2009
Always split aces and eights. That is one of the golden rules for blackjack players, but not according to a friend of mine. He insists that splitting eights against a dealer upcard of nine, ten, or ace is crazy because you are probably going to lose anyway, so why double your loss by splitting?
Although my friend's logic appears to make sense, it is flawed. ... (read more)
Hitting a royal the hard way8 May 2009
There is nothing more exciting than hitting a royal flush when you play video poker. The payout is big ... $1,000 if you are a quarter player, or $4,000 for a dollar player.
