Twinkle Twinkle Online Star

28 April 1999

At the Sydney Star City annual general meeting held in Sydney April 28, CEO Neil Gamble gave the clearest signal yet that Star City was becoming more serious about starting an Internet casino business.

"We are likely to form a strategic alliance in the next three months," Gamble said, but he was unsure if it would have an online business this year.

Gamble also said that the online version of Star City's proposed Internet business could be in another state or territory, as NSW still has no legislation permitting online casinos as yet. With the mainstream casino operators now looking seriously at going online after a worldwide market we can expect the cyber gambling industry to come under greater scrutiny down under.

As it stands, gambling is a state issue in Australia and the federal government has no real powers. They do have powers on communications issues which may allow a backdoor into regulation for cyber gambling.
