Use the Check-Raise to Improve Your Poker Play

13 June 2008
Let's say you're playing $10/$20 Limit Texas Hold'em and you've got pocket Aces. So you raise it up and everybody folds except the big blind, who calls. The flop brings three harmless-looking cards such as: 2h-7c-Jd The big blind checks, you bet the $10 and the big blind calls. ... (read more)

The Most Likely Way to Win Your Blackjack Hand Isn't Always the Best Play

31 May 2008
In blackjack, suppose you've got a pair of 9s against the dealer's 2. If you just stay pat with your 18, you'll win the hand 56% of the time (after adjusting for pushes). But if you split the 9s, you'll win with each 9 only 54% of the time (adjusted again for pushes). So you tell me -- what's the right ... (read more)

Many Proper Blackjack Pair Splits Lose Money

23 May 2008
Just because the book says to split a certain pair against a certain dealer up-card, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a winning play. All it means is that splitting in that particular situation is your best alternative. Take the infamous case of having this pair, for example: Dealer 10/? ... (read more)

Bad Beats Abound in Both Poker and Blackjack

16 May 2008
It hadn't happened to me in quite a while. I was playing two hands of blackjack and was dealt 20 on my first hand and 7/4 on my second. The dealer had an 8 up. I doubled down on the 11 and bought a 9 to make another 20. The dealer turned over 3 in the hole and the rest of the story goes into the "bad beat" column. ... (read more)

In Blackjack, a Deuce Is the Dealer's Ace – NOT!

25 April 2008
How many times have you heard another player at the blackjack table say something like: "Never double down against a deuce!" or "I wouldn't split those against a deuce!" or "A deuce is the dealer's Ace!" etc? So many players are terrified of a dealer's deuce up, and they shouldn't be. Where do these warped fears come from anyway? One thing is true. ... (read more)

Even Money and Insurance Are the Same Bet

18 April 2008
There's something fundamental about blackjack that most players don't understand, and what happened at the casino the other day gives an excellent example of it. The fellow on my left was playing two hands. He was dealt a blackjack and a 17. I had blackjack also. The dealer had an Ace up and asked if I wanted Even Money. ... (read more)

Can You Play Basic Strategy Blackjack with No House Edge?

11 April 2008
Typical blackjack players give about a 1.5% advantage to the house due to the mistakes they make playing their hands. But even those who get their entire basic strategy down cold still have a 0.5% disadvantage in the typical multi-deck game. So then, is a perfect basic strategy player doomed to end up a loser if he doesn't become a card counter? Probably not –- if he uses his table smarts. ... (read more)

In Blackjack, the Cards Tell You How Much to Bet

28 March 2008
Do you know what the real problem is with your blackjack game? More than anything else, it's that you bet the wrong amounts at the wrong time. Here's what I mean. Suppose you're sitting at the table with three other players. A new shoe is just about to begin. You place your usual starting bet, hoping for that one "big" shoe. ... (read more)

All Those Little Blackjack Mistakes Add Up

21 March 2008
I just returned from a Caribbean cruise. One of the men at our evening dinner table was also a frequent blackjack player in the casino, and I mentioned I had written a blackjack book. So, one morning, the two of us kicked back out on the sun deck, and discussed various strategy points of the game. ... (read more)

What Do You Have in These Omaha Hi/Lo Hands?

14 March 2008
Omaha Hi/Lo (8-or-better) is a "sister" game of Texas Hold'em. It creates more action than Hold'em for a couple of reasons. First, the pot is split between the best high and best low hands. Second, once the flop comes down, because of four hole cards in each player's hand, nearly everybody has ... (read more)
