Fred Renzey Gaming Guru - Page 13Blackjack Odds-'n-Ends Might Help You See the Light17 December 2005
I just arrived back home from a nine-hour blackjack day at four different local casinos. I must've played at fifteen different tables with fifty different people, and you know what? It seemed like they were all the same player. Nearly everybody plays the game basically the same way. Yet, they're ... (read more)
Poker Can Be an Addiction or a Character Builder10 December 2005
I'm over 60 years old. Three years ago when I walked into a local poker room, I knew most of the players. Their average age was probably forty-something and three or four kinds of poker were being played throughout the room.
Today when I walk into the room I don't recognize anybody. Most of the faces ... (read more)
Blackjack Players Don't Know the Right Way to Bet25 November 2005
Winning blackjack strategy contains two basic components. The first is to play all your hands according to the odds. The second is to bet your money according to the odds.
Now, the average blackjack hoofer at least tries to play his hands according to the odds. That's a good thing – it's getting off on the right foot. ... (read more)
Pot Odds Are Important in Any Kind of Poker18 November 2005
You're in a Texas Hold'em hand with a pair of 10s in the pocket. You raised before the flop and got re-raised by a player on your left. Everybody else folds and the flop comes down:
A – K – 5
You test the waters with another bet and your opponent pops you again. ... (read more)
Telling the Gems from the Junk in Blackjack Options11 November 2005
Recently, I was playing blackjack at a large out-of-town casino that offered the surrender option as well as a side bet called "Royal Match". Several miles away was another casino that also offered surrender and a different side bet called "Super Sevens".
What surprised and disappointed me was that most ... (read more)
Drawing to the 'Nut Low' in Omaha Hi/Lo Poker22 October 2005
About the only game besides Texas Hold'em that anybody plays in poker rooms anymore is Omaha Hi/Lo Split. Any kind of Stud poker has been just about trampled to death by the Hold'em stampede.
Omaha, however, is similar to Hold'em with its three-card flop, turn card and river card. In Omaha Hi/Lo, ... (read more)
Blackjack Players Who Know the Least Criticize the Most15 October 2005
I was playing blackjack at one of the local casinos yesterday in their high limit room. There was one other man at the table playing third base. Right off the top of a six-deck shoe, I was dealt 10/2 and he had 10/9 while the dealer showed a 4 for an up-card.
I know this will come as a shock to most ... (read more)
Novice Hold'em Players Want to See a Flop with Every Hand8 October 2005
If you've never played Texas Hold'em, but seen it on TV, you get the idea that you should at least see the flop before you throw your hand away – even if you're holding a "piece-o'-cheese" (terrible hand). In reality, this is a huge misconception.
What you see on TV are poker tournament "highlights". ... (read more)
Going Uphill on the Flop in Texas Hold'em23 September 2005
If you had your way in Texas Hold'em, you'd flop the lead hand every time you played. When you're holding A/K, you'd love to see an Ace or a King flop. If you've got pocket deuces, you'd be thrilled if a deuce hit the board.
But let's be realistic. Lots of times, even though you played a pretty good starting hand, you know you're trailing on the flop. ... (read more)
What Comes After Basic Strategy in Blackjack?16 September 2005
I'd like to say that most avid blackjack buffs commit their correct basic hand-playing strategy to memory – but they don't! Even those who consider themselves to be well polished players will misplay at least 20 hands on a basic strategy chart. Before these people can take their game to the next ... (read more)
