Your money or your life30 May 2017
The mugger is holding a gun to Benny’s head. “Mister, I’m telling you, your money or your life!” Benny pauses. The mugger gets angry, “Your money or your life, I say!” Benny pauses, “I’m thinking. I’m thinking.” In the casino, your money is your life. If you lose too much of it – I don’t care who you are or how much money you have – your life for that day or night is no longer fun. No one likes to lose money but some losses can be devastating; so much so that a little thought must go into just how much are you able to lose without being in a Jack Benny situation. “I’m thinking. I’m thinking,” should be your mantra. James Corrigan told me, “I give myself a few hundred dollars and when I lose that I quit. No ands, ifs or buts about it. I quit. I love to play, but I have given the games and my money a lot of thought for sure.” Shirley Dell: “I sometimes lose more than I originally thought I could handle. If I bring five hundred dollars to play with and I lose it, I might dig into my pocketbook and take more out. That is a mistake. In those cases I am not thinking straight.” John Charles: “My life is miserable if I lose. I’m telling it truly. I don’t care about shows or meals or people watching; I care about winning money. I don’t win money and I am not a happy man. It is not a wonderful life when you lose.” Marlene Pitt: “Your money or your life? In a casino? Oh, yes, they go hand-in-hand. You are not having a happy trip when you are losing money. Your life is miserable at that point. I know people pretend they can handle losses without a qualm but I think most of those people are lying.” The life of a casino gambler is almost fully defined by how much he or she wins or loses. Casino life is all about the money. Just walk into any casino in the world and money is the divinity; the sole object of desire. Look at those slot machines tempting us to play them; promising us riches, some of those riches beyond our belief. Listen to those chips being wagered at the table games. Hear the cheers of the winners and the moans of the losers. Jack Benny was right. He would know all the feelings of casino gamblers. In such cases, he didn’t have to say, “I’m thinking. I’m thinking.” In such cases, he knew without a doubt.
