Will artificial intelligence take over casinos?25 July 2023
A.I. is now making its way onto the human landscape in a big and scary way. [Please note: A.I. means artificial intelligence. It is a computer/robot some or other that now seems able to think, plan, have opinions and the like. Jump to the next paragraph to see what’s happening.] The latest A.I. has told us in no uncertain terms that he/she/it wants to do what it wants to do; help those it wants to help and hurt those it wants to hurt. There is even unsubtle talk about screwing up computer networks to make wrong decisions. There is one word to describe this that we all can understand and that word is TERMINATOR. If A.I. really gets loose out there, in there, around there, it could be humanity that it doesn’t like and it will be humanity that it wants to destroy. Clearly, that means you and me. Still, some slot manufacturers have looked closely at this situation and see a glorious potential for A.I. in the casinos by programming slot machines. Or, actually, allowing A.I. to control slot machines and do what they want to do with them to enhance the casino experience. The positive aspect of allowing slot machines to be real thinking machines is that they can subtly reward patrons who have really been good patrons and punish those patrons who have been bad patrons. In short, they can punish patrons who need to be punished and reward patrons that need to be rewarded based on whether they like or hate these patrons. Yes, we are indeed entering the new world and maybe A.I. might not work out for any good whatsoever. It could decide that people who enjoy casinos aren’t worth staying alive. Goodbye us. Wars may be fought like Skynet did in “Terminator Genisys.” Skynet might decide to let us live. That is a possibility. It might also put some of us, meaning slot players they dislike, into slot player zoos. Could that be you, your spouse, your family residing forever in a climate-controlled zoo? Nobody can tell us what the truth will be right now. We are gambling big time with artificial intelligence. Who knows what a being who was not evolved naturally out there in the real world might think, might feel, might do or might do to us. Slot machines are a gamble, with a little “g,” while A.I. is a gamble with a big “G.” Make that a giant “G.” (Does that “G” stand for goner? Meaning we are goners? I sure hope not.) Maybe I’ve seen too many science fiction movies and read too many science fiction books but certainly the early A.I. beings don’t seem too friendly or subservient to their creators, meaning us, meaning what person programed this intelligence and was that person – let me make this clear – sane? What if the god of the A.I. beings is completely nuts? All the best in and out of the casinos! Frank Scoblete’s web site is www.frankscoblete.com.
