Why they like their games

1 October 2019

Basically gambling writers express their opinions about which games to play and how to play them. Of course this is a biased representation and many of us just keep pounding away at our beliefs. So what do some players think about the games they play? Here are some expressing their ideas:

BILLY: Give me roulette any day. First of all, unlike blackjack or even craps, no one cares how you bet, or how many bets you make or for how much money. You get these real pains in the game of blackjack that want to tell everyone how to play. These players can be really annoying. Everyone at roulette is just concerned with their own bets. I like that. A few bets win and most don’t.

The game also has a pedigree. I think it goes back a bunch of centuries. So you are playing a game that many kings and nobles played and I also like that. I know the game has a somewhat high house edge but it is slow, especially at a crowded table, so the slower speed reduces the hit on your money. The only negative is when there are too many players and the ones who are aggressive knock over your chips. That doesn’t happen much. Anyway, that’s how I see it.

KAREN: Blackjack is my game. I’ve been playing it for over 35 years. I remember those great single-deck games in Las Vegas. You don’t find them much anymore unless they pay six-to-five for blackjacks. I actually think casinos are looking to make more money per game than ever before but still blackjack is a game where your decision on how to play your hand is a key ingredient. I even always keep a playing card on me just to make sure that I am playing correctly. It’s almost like my lucky charm.

Most blackjack players are nice people with the occasional idiot who thinks it is his mission to have everyone play the way he says they should play. But most of the time you don’t get these people. Blackjack tables can be very friendly most of the time. I have had some good conversations with other players and some dealers. I actually find it a relaxing game to play.

LI WEI: I play baccarat and I believe in streaks. I see them all the time and I want to jump on them. I try to look for either “player” or “bank” winning a few in a row and then I bet them. If my bets keep winning, I increase them slowly. I used to make the “tie” bet but it really is not a good bet. I can’t say I am ahead but I have had a lot of fun. One thing I do not like is the fact that the old long tables are rarely seen or in use anymore. I miss that style of game. I play pretty big money and I could afford to play the long tables.

I liked to deal the cards. I liked when other players dealt the cards. You felt you were more a part of the game. Now it is mostly mini-baccarat that you find even in the high roller rooms. Mini baccarat has the dealer dealing the cards. That takes away some of the fun in my opinion. You are more involved when the players deal the cards.

TONY: I mean, man, no game matches craps and I have played them all. You have so many bets you can make and some of them pay really good. I know, I know. that you will say that many of the big-paying bets have high house edges but what the heck; I play to get a thrill and craps can give me that thrill. When a shooter is hot the table explodes with excitement. I have to tell you that I yell and scream like a maniac at times. Players are high-fiving and cheering when numbers are being rolled one after another. You don’t really get that at other games, except maybe occasionally. At craps a whole table can get hot at once. That makes the game really terrific. A hot streak can win you a lot of money.

Yes, yes, I will tell you that like 90% of players, I do not like “don’t” players because I do think they are rooting against me. But there aren’t many of them and when they are at a table I root for them to get destroyed. That might not be nice of me but hey, “I gotta be me!”

MARIE: I am a slot player and I make no bones about it. I want to win a jackpot that changes my life, like a multi-million-dollar dream win of all time. That’s why I play. Show me the money! I want to have a life changing win that gets me all the material things I always wanted. You can’t get that kind of money at other games unless you are betting thousands of dollars on your bets. Most people can’t bet that way, but at slots anyone can go for the gold, even low rollers and that is me.

Okay, folks, there you have some of your fellow players expressing their ideas about the games they play. I am sure you have a reason for playing what you play.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
