Why have you stopped recommending the Doey-Don't system?3 January 2010
Dear Greg: Yes, we no longer recommend the Doey-Don't as the optimal way to bet in the random game of craps or when using Golden Touch dice control. One of our writers, John "Skinny," gave a great explanation as to why we now skip over this as the best method for betting. I will paraphrase what he said in the following: You wager $10 on the pass line and $10 on the don't pass line so in 36 rolls you will have wagered $720 and lost $10 when the 12 appeared that one time out of 36 ($10/$720 = 1.389%). You can expect to lose 1.389% of all money that is placed on the those pass/don't pass line bets or come/don't come bets using the Doey-Don't. Here is the rub and why I recommend not using the Doey-Don't system. If you make a $10 pass line bet with odds, you can expect to lose 1.41% of that $10 or about 14 cents. To put the same odds on the pass line using the Doey-Don't you have to wager $10 on the pass line and $10 on the don't pass line. You will only lose 1.389%, which is slightly less than the house advantage of 1.41% on the pass line wager. But you lose 1.389 of your total wager of $20, which comes to approximately 28 cents. You have a lower house advantage but you have to wager twice as much, which effectively doubles your amount at risk in order to be able to get the same amount of odds behind your pass line wager. In short, why pay more to accomplish the same thing? Now is this bet atrocious, as are those Crazy Crapper bets or the place bets on the 5 and 9, or the field? No. But the bet is not as good as just the straight pass line and come bets or the straight don't pass and don't come bets. All the best in and out of the casinos!
