Why do some craps layouts bar 2 instead of 12 on the don't pass?

26 February 2012

Hi Mr. Scoblete,

I have a question, and I can't seem to find an answer to it anywhere in the vast expanse of cyberspace.

It seems like craps layouts in most casinos, including casinos in Las Vegas, have a don't pass line that pushes on the 12 (BAR 12). However, in Reno, Tahoe, and elsewhere in Northern Nevada, the don't pass pushes on the 2. Obviously the odds are the same on either layout.

I just wanted to know why? It seems like there might be some interesting historical reason. Every other casino I've seen (East Coast US + Canada) has BAR 12.

I know this isn't an intriguing strategy question or anything, but I figured that a man like you who has spent a lot of time and energy on the game of craps might know the answer (or at least know who to ask).

Thanks,
Will

Dear Will:

I haven't got the faintest idea. I asked around and everyone I asked had no idea. It might just be that Northern Nevada wanted to distinguish itself from Las Vegas and other casinos in the southern part of the state.

I am putting this up for anyone out there who might know the answer to write me.

I just put you on my private, members-only website at www.goldentouchcraps.com for a 30-day free subscription. Please feel free to post. We have over 5,000 members and the conversations are great.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
