What we really feel

24 October 2017

I am writing this article for my casino gambling colleagues who have been playing the games for a while now. This is not geared to someone thinking of going to the casinos for the first time, because your frustration level is not yet at peak. But give it time.

What do you really want to say to other players, dealers, pit people, reservation agents whose behavior annoys you? Come on, tell everyone reading this the truth.

BARBARA: I want a simple smile when I ask a cocktail server for a drink. I give a nice tip and many times the server just looks at me with those dead fish eyes. Aren’t tips what they live on? So why the coldness? I don’t get it.

MATT: Dealers at craps kill me when they are having private conversations as the game is going on. I don’t want to hear about their parties or weekends or anything. If they want to talk to the players that is OK because they are there for the players. If they hold these private conversations among themselves that really, really bothers me. Don’t the dealers have to take classes in how to make the game enjoyable for players? Talking to each other is not right unless it is specifically talk about the game being played.

TED: I have no problem with dealers who speak more than one language but when they are dealing to us they should speak English. If they are holding a conversation say in Chinese with another Chinese person, it is uncomfortable because you don’t know what they are saying. If you have the least paranoia you might think they are making fun of you. So either be quiet or speak English.

MELANIE: I hate players who curse when they lose a hand. Many of us – me included – do not want to hear the “F” bomb. Some players are so rude in the language they use. Didn’t any of them have parents who taught them how to talk in civilized society?

JANICE: I hate the players who come over to my slot machine when I am playing and ask me how I am doing. What business is it of theirs? Worse than that are the players who ask me how long I will continue to play at that machine because they want to play it. The place could have hundreds of vacant machines; why don’t they play them?

DAVID: I hate blackjack players who give other players at the table unsolicited advice. Just shut up already. No one wants to hear your theories.

KEVIN: I like to take care with my throw at craps. I don’t waste time but I do fix the dice and throw in a gentle way. Every once in a while there will be a gruff individual who scolds me and will say something like, “Just throw the dice already!” I like to shoot with a little style, just like I dress. I really feel like telling these people to shut their traps and go to another table if they don’t like the way I throw the dice.

LILITH: I do not like dealing with people who are always showing everyone how rushed they are. I find if I am at the reservation desk and one of the reservationists is acting all annoyed that annoys me. If I ask for a specific type of room and they sigh as if this is a stupid request, I feel like telling on them. I don’t do that because jobs are scarce but I get really angry. Just check to see if you have any of the rooms I am asking about.
