The Why of It All16 July 2024
Are these elements essentials to the gambling experience? I think so, yes. Let’s go simple first. Take a look at the ceiling of the casinos. Aside from the eye in the sky, most of the décor is drab, boring, unmemorable. And the eye isn’t all that interesting either. You look at the ceiling and you probably pretty quickly look away. Nobody wants to look at dull things. That’s why we turn away rather fast. Dull is to be escaped. So, we now look down at the floor; the carpeting. Yikes! What a mish-mash. The colors clash; they go this way and that way and almost every way. We prefer to look straight ahead – into the table game pits or the slot machines. Now, those areas are in fact interesting. They have sounds coming from them; coins sound; chips sounds; dealers’ voices; machine sounds. Ah, these are the sounds of the casinos. I know these sounds. These sounds are not boring like the rug. Not like that boring rug indeed, not at all. And the music; tunes we know, in fact fun tunes; famous tunes; snap your fingers to those tunes. They play over and over; non-stop. And the lighting pushes the music forward; fast forward in fact. The lights have a rhythm of their own. They seem like a combination of Christmas lights or some such. The casinos have divided themselves into “types” – working class lunchtime players; some somewhat rich folks; players who love to play – perhaps too much. They are open to all but especially to their desired grouping. You even have casinos that cater to craps players; blackjack players; roulette players, mini-baccarat players. There are plenty of people who enjoy those table games during the day. The minimums are somewhat low and they fit people’s budgets. These players can come back day after day. The lighting fits the mood the casino is trying to produce. So, what do we have? We have a mind-boggling attempt through sounds and more sounds and lights and more lights to bring everyone into the fold of the daily player. Almost all of these enhancements push us to play more, perhaps drink more, and let it all hang out. All the best in and out of the casinos.
