The one-bet rule at craps

26 June 2018

FROM JUNE’S HUSBAND: I read your answer to my wife’s e-mail and I understand perfectly well what you are saying about one bet at the slot machines you recommended for her to play. Now I want you to tackle craps.

The usual advice from gambling writers is to make about three bets, usually pass line, place or come bets. I know many craps players make far more bets especially as a roll has lasted for some time.

Yet you have upset the applecart, so to speak. With 36 possible combinations of numbers, just betting one number means long waits as other numbers hit. Can you explain this idea you have? I trust your judgment. I want to understand it.

FRANK RESPONDS: First off, you are right; there will be periods, some of them somewhat long, where all the other numbers come up and your one number doesn’t. Then bang! The seven shows its ugly face. (Or you are betting one darkside number and that number shows.)

However, craps is not just one shooter. Most craps players play the game often enough over the years to see the house percentages starting to take a toll on their bankroll. The more bets an individual makes, the more money the house edge eats away. Yes, the player will get plenty of hits with more and more numbers wagered but these hits will not in any way overcome the ongoing losses over time.

With a one-number bet there are only two numbers with which you’ll be concerned, your number and the seven. Now the seven comes up six times and your number will come up three times for a 4 or 10; four times for the 5 or 9 or five times for the 6 or 8. If you can do this – and I can – I do not think of those other numbers as part of the game I am playing. My game is my one number versus the seven. Every other number? They are dead time.

Right now you are in dead time. Somewhere out there in the casino world there is a shooter on a blistering road. I am not on that shooter. You are not on that shooter. Every number the person is hitting is not our number. We have no number. I don’t feel bad about this. You don’t feel bad about this. We don’t know who this shooter is or where he is playing. All his numbers to us are dead time.

When you are at a table, the other numbers just don’t exist for you, only the seven and your number. The hit on your bankroll over time will be far, far less than it would have been had you gone for multiple numbers. Remember this, all those other numbers should be expressed as “What other numbers?”

The bet you should make is a come bet with full odds (or what you can afford) and that’s that. If the shooter sevens out you have lost only one bet and you move on to the next shooter. Your bankroll will love you for this.
