The don't conundrum21 November 2012
On the come-out roll of the shooter, the darkside player wagers on the don’t pass because he wants the 2 and 3 for a win, whereas the “rightside” players on the pass Line are hoping for a winning 7 or 11. When the shooter has established his point the darkside player is rooting for the 7, meaning the shooter loses his pass line bet but the darkside player wins his don’t pass bet. This has caused many “rightside” players to dislike, disdain, deride and dread the presence of a darksider at the table. They feel the darksider is fundamentally opposed to what the “rightsiders” want. In many cases, though not all cases, this is correct. If you are a darksider, you have been called many names, most of them unprintable on a quality website such as this, but the “devil’s dunce” and “Lucifer’s piglet” can be considered the least of such names. But if you are a darksider who doesn’t care about being popular at the craps tables, there is an excellent way to play the game with little fear of great losses and a good chance of some wins. It might not be the most exciting way to play but, then again, losing money doesn’t seem too exciting a prospect either. Most craps players are action junkies; they want bet after bet and they want to scream and yell when things are going good, and moan and groan when things are going against them. If you apply my darkside strategy, you won’t be cheering and screaming because your wins will be somewhat small. Also, to be fair, it is rare to see any darksider screaming or yelling when the 7 appears and clears the board of the “rightside” players’ bets. Doing so could result in death or at the very least, a severe look. So let us take a walk through the one-bet darksider method I developed over 20 years ago when I didn’t fear for my safety at a craps table. The shooter is on the come-out roll. You do not place a don’t pass bet. Why? You do not want to have to fight off the 7 and 11 on a single shooter during the come-out. You can lose too many bets that way. The tendency will be to keep putting out bets until the shooter establishes his point. You don’t want to do that. The first placement of a don’t pass bet faces an eight to three advantage for the casino – you’ll lose eight times when the 7 and 11 appear but only win three times when the 2 and 3 appear. It is the first placement of a don’t pass bet that sees the darksider in a precarious situation. However, once the shooter has established his point, then you put out a don’t come bet. Yes, the don’t come bet is no different than a don’t pass bet, except for one very, very important fact. While the darksider will lose on the 7 and 11, and only win on the 2 and 3, on that initial placement, if the loss is on the 7 – the shooter is finished with his roll! Yes, you lost the bet, but you don’t have to worry about this shooter making any more sevens against you – he’s done for that hand. That means the only discipline a darksider must have is to not bet again if the 11 should show. The 11 will lose the darksider his bet, but the shooter will continue to hold the dice. You must resist the urge to go up against this shooter again. Just relax and daydream as the shooter’s roll continues. The bottom line of this strategy is quite simple; one bet for one shooter. You never let a single shooter knock you off time and again. The chances of many shooters, one after another, banging away at you with that 11 are rare, a one in 18 chance. Certainly in the long range mathematics of the game, the house will take its 1.4 percent of the total amount of money you bet on the don’t but using my one-bet method will stretch out how long it will take for the casino to lift significant funds from your bankroll. The longer the time, the better for you; it’s that simple. After all, darkside players who want to have four or five bets working at the same time face the very real possibility of losing four or five times faster. That isn’t good. Gamblers might think such foolish ways of betting are fun but losing money stinks, to put it mildly. So one don’t come bet on one shooter and you can stretch your money over time. The next problem to think about is do you lay odds on your don’t come bet once it goes up on a number? The mathematical answer is “yes, of course.” If you have the bankroll, placing a small don’t come with as much as your can afford in odds is the best way to go. If you don’t have the bankroll just stick to one small don’t come bet and enjoy the game, quietly so you don’t bring down the wrath of the other players.
