Tamburin to Teach Card Counting and Tournament Blackjack at Tunica Jamboree

21 October 2003

Everyone who gambles in casinos knows the underlying truth of the situation: The casinos want to have an edge in all the games and most of the bets they offer within those games. That edge, from slight to scary depending on the game and the bets made, pays the bills, the employees' salaries, and the owners and shareholders. Without an edge, the casino is like a store that sells merchandise below what it costs – which means a soon to be bankrupt store. So no one begrudges the fact that casinos are in the business of business and not in the business of giving away the store.

But some casino games can be beaten by savvy players. One such game is blackjack. Blackjack can be approached in two ways, by card counting in regular games and by developing the skill necessary to win at the tournament version. In the former, you play against the house; in the latter, you play against your fellow players.

My colleague and fellow Jackpot columnist Dr. Henry Tamburin is one of the world's leading authorities on both aspects of blackjack play and he'll be teaching seminars in both card counting and tournament blackjack at my upcoming Frank Scoblete's Gamblers Jamboree on November 14, 15 and 16 at Gold Strike Hotel and Casino which is sponsored by TunicaCasinoResorts.com. He'll also be teaching a seminar in basic strategy, the computer derived perfect play of every player's hand against every dealer upcard, which is the foundation of all winning blackjack play.

Dr. Tamburin has been playing, writing articles and books, and teaching seminars about the games for over 30 years. In addition to his insightful columns in Jackpot, Dr. Tamburin writes for many of casino gaming's most popular magazines and newspapers. In fact, he has published over 700 articles on gaming topics. "I never run out of ideas," he said, "because the games have so many nuances."

He has written six best-selling books about casino games, including: Craps: Take the Money and Run, Winning Baccarat Strategies, Henry Tamburin on Casino Gambling, The Reference Guide to Casino Gambling, and Blackjack: Take the Money and Run.

While Dr. Tamburin is an expert at all the games, his specialty is blackjack, a game he loves and has been playing since the start of his gambling career. "Ever since Atlantic City allowed casino gambling in the mid-1970s, I have been playing blackjack." He is the publisher and editor of the monthly Blackjack Insider e-Newsletter, which reaches over 11,000 subscribers. His websites are www.bjinsider.com and www.smartgaming.com.

As a player Dr. Tamburin has accomplished what other casino players only dream about – he knows how to win at the game of blackjack. He also knows how to win at tournament blackjack, most recently making it into the finals of the Las Vegas Hilton's Million Dollar Blackjack Tournament.

Dr. Tamburin states: "The skills needed to win in casino blackjack and in tournament blackjack are different types of skills. In casino blackjack you must play perfect basic strategy and count the cards, raising and lowering your bets based on the edge you have at any given moment." According to Dr. Tamburin this is not impossible to do, it just takes discipline and practice to learn and patience to perform it well in the casinos. "At the Tunica Jamboree, I'll teach players a very simple count that can be learned quickly. It will give them a slight edge in most of the better blackjack games, especially the ones found in Tunica."

However, tournament blackjack is not a game where counting cards is the most effective method of play. "In a tournament, you are playing against the other players. You don't even have to win money, you just have to have more money than the others to win the prize. So a player needs to know when to bet, how much to bet, and what to avoid when playing against other players. Luck does play a role in tournament blackjack in the short run, but in the long run the player with the skill is going to make it to the finals more and win more cash than the other players. In fact, if you really get good at tournament blackjack, you can make some decent money at the game. That's why there are more and more players entering these tournaments."

Thankfully for the informed tournament player most of the other players who partake in the tournament are not aware of the proper strategies and are playing with a disadvantage against the smart players. "In my seminar at the Jamboree, I'll show you the techniques that I and other skilled pros use to get the edge over the unskilled players. These techniques will give you a better chance to win the money."

Blackjack players, this is your opportunity to sharpen your skills under the guidance of one of casino gaming's greatest authors and experts. "I'm looking forward to meeting and helping everyone," said Dr. Tamburin. "Personal instruction and hands-on workshops are the best ways for players to improve."

The "Maverick of Blackjack" at Tunica Jamboree

Walter Thomason, the controversial author of the best-selling blackjack book, Twenty-First Century Blackjack: A New Strategy for a New Millennium, will also be appearing at the Frank Scoblete's Gamblers Jamboree. Walter has irritated just about every major blackjack authority by his research into his 4-Step Progression System, which he maintains is a far better way to play blackjack than just flat betting. He's played over 125,000 real hands, not computer simulations, to prove his point! Walter will answer any questions you have about progression betting and he'll be happy to explain his radical concepts in blackjack play.

Frank Scoblete's Gamblers' Jamboree, sponsored by TunicaCasinoResorts.com, is $199 for one person, and $299 for two people. It will be held at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica. If you wish to stay at Gold Strike, special Jamboree rates will be in effect once you are registered. Register by calling 1-866-SET-DICE or 1-800-944-0406 or send checks or money orders made out to Frank Scoblete, Box 783, Lynbrook, NY 11563.
